Why does everyone assume that Tauriel has to die before the end of the third movie? “Because she’s not in Lord of the Rings, duh.”
I’ll give you that, but think for a damned second before pointless sludge exits your mouth. She’s said to be the Captain of the guard, the head honcho (honchess?) of the Mirkwood army. For you people only relying on movie-canon, there was more shit going down that what was shown. Can anyone say, “Battle at Mirkwood?”
Basically after Lorien pushed back Sauron’s forces off their front yard three times they said ‘Screw it, let’s get ‘em where they’re at’ and moved into Mirkwood to help Thranduil bring down Dol Guldur after Sauron kicked the bucket.
What’s to say that Tauriel still isn’t commanding a part of the army as they led the attack? Oh, sorry - she has to die because of some predisposed rumor that her existence is only for some love interest/friendship? How do we know PJ isn’t just stirring the pot with that comment?
While it’s true that Tauriel can be alive in the Lord of the Rings movie verse.
Sadly Lorien’s forces won’t be there because according to film version of the Two Towers Lorien’s forces were decimated at the Battle of the Hornburg on March 3 of the Third Age, 8 days for the first attack on Lorien. (Lorien was attacked three times on March 11th,15th, and 23rd of the Third Age)
You could argue that Lorien might (and that’s a big might considering most of the Elves have already sailed away to the Undying Lands at this point) have more than the 300 Elves they sent to help Théoden but that’s also a stretch given the Elven population in Middle-earth at the time.
Don’t get me wrong. I don’t think anyone could have done as great of a job at adapting Tolkien’s work as PJ and Fran Walsh were able to do (barring making it a sprawling television series) but some of the changes (this being one of them) are one of the main things that makes me apprehensive about the changes they are making and how it fits in continuity.
Back on the subject of whether Tauriel will live or die in the last Hobbit film. Considering who they are planning on pairing her up with I can see where people might think she might go. Personally I think it has more to do with the fact that Elves only love one person and Tauriel doesn’t seem the type to let that do without a fight. (and as such might die in the process) But hey I can be wrong.
